In the wild it’s mostly predation and food abundance, but humans messing around is certainly part of it.
In the tank there is a very long list of stresses when the owner doesn’t know what they are doing, including bad stocking, bad maintenance, bad feeding, no clue about water parameters, and ignorant use of additives and chemicals and such.
