For current working software engineers and other work computer science disciplines?
would you say that you gained most of your skills in the class rooms, interning, or learning on your own? i find my teachers totally useless. i try learning on my own, but there are somethings i get confused about. as far as programming goes, i know the syntax, but i keep read that jut learning the syntax is not enough. what would you say.

Learning on my own, and practicing. My textbook is also pretty good. My teachers could be alot better.

i learned most by doing. in school i learned a little bit about programming. the syntax of a language is important ofcourse, the "style" readability is also important, as a programmer you should be willing to dive into the details , and ask you collegues for advice but in the end it almost always turns out that you have to find out yourself. and that is not only with coding, but also with documentating, how to get the specs, testing the software,

Learning is a hard thing to do. About the only thing I can say is keep on trying. You will find that hands on experience and time is when your training will sink in. You will spend years suddenly discovering what they meant in text books. You will make mistakes, you will learn by your mistakes. I still after 35 years in my field find something that will jump up and bite me and become so obvious. This is when you get moments of accomplishment. You finally figured out what they meant 20 years ago. To put it bluntly, you WILL spend the rest of your life learning.
