I am interested in doing advertising but do not want to go to an art school which is the only place I have found offering an "advertising" major. I have read that communications can qualify you for an advertising type job. IS this correct? TV and radio, obviously, but also print media such as magazines, newspapers and etc.; web-based media, advertising, film, and public relations. It all depends on how you focus your courses, and importantly, on which internships and work on campus you do.

I know you can be an esthetician, makeup artist, hair stylist, and nail technician. But what are some industry and company careers I could do with this license? I would love to work for mac or sephora, or maybe even an extension company. I know that salon is probably not the right thing for me.

You should go to a makeup school that specifically teaches makeup and styling (not cutting) hair. Also, the advantage of a makeup school is that you can be a minimum of age 16 (depending on the schools) and you don’t have to be a high school graduate.

I would say your best bet is teaching with writing on the side. Teaching at a university is a wonderful deal if you can get tenure track.
